Shayna Baszler talks Josh Barnett, Rousey match, More

Fightful Select caught up with former NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler before her Bloodsport match was announced.

Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp began the interview by informing Shayna that he did not beat Shazza McKenzie at BLP’s Slamilton event. Sean admitted he did not listen to Shayna’s advice.

Sean brought up that since the last time they spoke, the merger between UFC and the WWE happened. Sean would ask Shayna if she would be open to a cross-promoted matchup where she could potentially have an MMA-style fight similar to the match she had against Ronda at SummerSlam. Shayna told Fightful it was interesting because they were trying to get some cross-promotion with the match, but the timing did not work out.

Shayna mentions that if you have seen her YouTube channel and interviews, it waves a banner of the history of pro wrestling. She talks about how MMA and pro wrestling come from this shared place. Shayna said the opportunities for promoting MMA and Pro Wrestling are out there and that she’s here for it.

Shayna talked about her time training with Josh Barnett and her lineage from Billy Robinson. She said you can see the style she wrestles, and you can compare it to people who train with Josh. Shayna said you can see it with Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir’s work style because they trained under Josh.

Shayna said that Josh is a role model and a martial arts father to her. She also told us she carries on the tradition and waves the banner of catch wrestling to what Billy and Josh believe pro wrestling to be. Shanya added that she thinks Billy would be proud, which is important.

Sean asked if anyone surprised her in the ring with chain wrestling. Shayna said, “All the Joshi girls pretend they don’t know much. She told us that she was working in the Indies in Japan.
