WWE Raw Review 19/6/23

WWE Raw is emanating from the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland Ohio.

In Ring Segment:

Seth Rollins' music hits, and he makes his way down to the ring. As Seth stands in the ring, basking in the crowd singing along to his theme song, he is attacked from behind by Finn Balor. Balor knocks Rollins out of the ring, but Rollins pulls Balor out of the ring, but Balor is able to get the better of Rollins and sends him into the ring post. Balor continues the attack on Rollins until WWE Officials come down to the ring to separate Balor from Rollins. Balor does back off with the Officials, but he manages to escape them, running back to Rollins, climbs the steps and jumps onto Rollins with a Coup De Grace. Balor then climbs onto the commentary table and hits Rollins with another Coup De Grace.

Balor appears to be leaving, heading towards the ramp. Balor again runs back, goes up the steps and delivers a third Coup De Grace to Rollins. Rollins is rolling around on the floor, clearly in a lot of pain.

Backstage Segment:

After the break, we are backstage and we see Seth Rollins holding his ribs, Adam Pearce walking with him, holding the title. Rollins is shouting for Finn Balor. Once again, Rollins is attacked from behind by Balor. Balor sends Rollins crashing over some gear and puts his boot over Rollins’ neck. Balor grabs the title and says that he has been waiting seven years for this moment and at MitB, the title is coming to him. Pearce tells Balor that he has done enough.

In Ring Segment:

The Miz is already in the ring. He says that he has an issue with Seth Rollins. Miz says that he was going to accept Rollins’ open challenge and win the title but now he can’t. Miz says that he is a God in the hellhole that is Cleveland. He says that he was going to give Cleveland an opportunity to have a champion worth having. So, he will now issue his own open challenge to anyone in Cleveland, because he wants everyone to see what a winner looks like amongst a crowd of losers.

Tommaso Ciampa’s music hits! Ciampa gets into the ring, tells Miz that it has been a long time and he drops Miz with a right hand. Ciampa asks the ref to ring the bell.

Match 1: The Miz vs Tomasso Ciampa

Ciampa stomps away at a stunned Miz. Miz rolls out of the ring to escape, but Ciampa follows him and bounces him off the commentary table a few times. Ciampa lays the cover of the commentary table against the table and gives Miz a back suplex through it. Ciampa sits on the table and pats himself on the shoulder. Ciampa gets Miz in the ring and sizes Miz up. Ciampa hits a pair of corner clotheslines before ducking one from Miz and hitting a diving clothesline. Ciampa exposes his knee and goes for a running knee, but Miz manages to avoid it. Miz then hits a kneeling DDT but only gets a two-count. Miz punches away at Ciampa before hitting a running boot to the face. Miz removes his shirt and pulls Ciampa up by the beard. Ciampa chops the chest of Miz and runs the ropes, but Miz big boots him down. Miz puts Ciampa on the middle rope and chokes him. Miz rakes the eyes. Miz gets Ciampa in the corner and kicks away at him. Ciampa fights back and chops the chest a few times. Miz reverses a whip to the corner and hits a corner clothesline. Miz heads to the top rope for a diving axe handle, but Ciampa takes him out with a knee strike. Ciampa drops Miz with the Fairy Tale Ending, covers Miz and picks up the win.

A good opening match. Great to see Ciampa back. Let’s hope he gets some meaningful storylines and feuds. I did not like him being teamed up with Miz before his injury. Miz again being a good workhorse and putting over everyone. Grade C+

In Ring Segment:

Well, technically, on stage segment. Judgement Day is on the stage. Finn Balor is pacing. He says that Seth Rollins' open challenge has been cancelled by him. He says that he will be the only one to take the World Heavyweight Championship from Rollins. The crowd begin to sing Rollins’ theme song. Rhea Ripley tells the crowd to sit down, shut up, respect the Judgement Day and Mami. At MitB, the crowd will be buried at their feet, because Balor will bring home the World Heavyweight CHampionship to the Judgement Day. As for Mami, she has the Women’s Division locked down as she is the most dominant woman in the WWE. Damian Priest will win the Money in the Bank briefcase and her Dom-Dom will put down the crowd's favourite Cody Rhodes.

Priest takes the microphone and speaks in Spanish. He says that at Money in the Bank, the briefcase comes home with him, and the contract will read Damian Priest. Priest then warns Cody Rhodes to keep Dominik’s name out of his mouth, or he will never be able to fight again.

Dominik attempts to speak, but the crowd starts to boo him incredibly loudly. He attempts a couple of times to speak, but the crowd does not let up with the booing. Rhea speaks to Dominik to attempt to give him a confidence boost. He tries again but once again the crowd showers him in boos. He finally shouts “Cody, you’re going to see what I’m going to do to you at Money in the Bank if you can find some partners to face the united Judgment Day together.”

Video Package:

We see a video recap of Jey Uso turning on Roman Reigns and leaving the Bloodline on Friday’s SmackDown.

Backstage Interview:

Byron Saxton is backstage with the Undisputed Tag Team Champions. He asks them about the Bloodline implosion, but Owens says that he cannot take the questions about the Bloodline anymore, they don’t care. Zayn says that they need to talk. Zayn tells Owens that he is a “rage-a-holic” and he has anger problems. Zayn says that if Owens can go the rest of the night without a temper tantrum, then he will drop it. If he can’t do it, then Owens will have to admit that he has a problem. If he can, then he will shut up about it. Owens agrees to this. Zayn apologises to Byron that he had to witness this, but he has had 20 years of this.

Match 2: Sonya Deville & Chelsea Green vs Kayden Carter & Katana Chance

Katana Chance starts off against Sonya Deville. Chelsea Green quickly distracts Chance, and Deville takes her down with a big boot. Deville puts Chance in the corner and stomps her down. Green tags in and chokes Chance with her boot. Green takes her down by the hair and knocks Carter off the apron. Green pulls Chance’s hair and taunts the crowd. Chance comes back with a headscissor takeover after rolling off Carter. Carter tags in and attacks both Deville and Green. Carter takes them down and hits them with a dropkick/splash combo. Carter kicks Deville in the face and hits a snapmare. Chance tags in. Chance and Carter hit a springboard moonsault/slingshot leg drop combo, but Green breaks up the pin. Carter and Chance trade tags. They hit Deville with a falling neckbreaker/450 Splash combo for the win!

A quick match, glad that Chance and Carter won. They need to build up some big momentum on the main roster, especially after how they were portrayed in NXT. Hopefully they will be seen as credible contenders for the Women’s Tag Team Titles. Not really much to say about this match as it was very short. Grade C-

On Stage Interview:

Cathy Kelly is on the stage and introduces the crowd to Cody Rhodes. She asks Cody about the challenge from Judgement Day. Cody says that Cleveland is on fire, and the Judgement Day is also on fire. He says that Rhea is dominating, Priest is a few steps away from winning the MitB ladder match, and Balor might walk away as the World Heavyweight Champion. But then there is Dominik Mysterio. Cody says it won't be hard to find 2 people to team with him. Cody accepts the challenge.

Match 3: Cedric Alexander & Shelton Benjamin vs Indus Sher w/Jinder Mahal

Before the match begins, we see a replay of Indus Sher decimating Alexander and Benjamin two weeks ago on Raw.

Before the bell rings, Benjamin knees Sanga off the apron. Alexander and Benjamin double-team Veer in the ring before knocking Sanga off the apron. Alexander goes for a plancha on Sanga, but Sanga catches him. Benjamin hits a blockbuster off the apron on Sanga. Benjamin gets in the ring, but Veer flattens him with an avalanche. Sanga then drops Alexander ribs-first on the barricade. In the ring, Benjamin fights back against Veer, but Veer kicks him in the midsection before punching him down. Sanga tags in. Veer hangs Benjamin on the top rope for Sanga to big boot in the midsection. Veer tags back in. Indus Sher hits a sidewalk slam/diving leg drop combo for the win.

Another uninspired match from Indus Sher. I very much dislike “big men squash matches”, especially when there is no crowd interest in it either. It just makes for a boring match. Grade F

Backstage Segment:

Owens and Zayn are walking backstage. A stagehand bumps into Owens, spilling water on his shirt. The stagehand apologises profusely to Owens. Owens manages to keep his anger in check and accepts the apology. Owens says that he doesn’t have an anger problem, he has an idiot problem. Owens and Zayn then see Matt Riddle. Riddle talks about watching films like “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”. Owens shouts before then smiling and saying that those are great movies. Owens then wishes him luck in his match, Riddle pats Owens on the chest and Owens says to not touch him.

In Ring Segment:

Logan Paul is sitting on top of a ladder in the ring under the MitB briefcases. He says that it is great to be back in Ohio. He says that when he was walking down the ramp, he was looking at so many kids full of ambition, just like he was. He goes on to say that the best people in the world come from Cleveland and names LeBron James, Jerry Lawler and himself. When he looks back on his life in Cleveland, he thinks about all the moments that made him great, but his greatest moment was him leaving. When he left Cleveland, he got to pursue his dreams in Hollywood. He continues to basically mock Cleveland. He then goes on to say that today is the day that Clevelanders stop losing. He is going to bring respect back. He says that he called the WWE Executives and he will be competing in the Money in the Bank ladder match. He says that he will win and cash in on whoever he wants, whenever he wants.

Ricochet then comes out. He says that he wants to congratulate Logan on getting into the MitB match. He says that he understands Logan has a massive social media presence, but Ricochet was the one who made him go viral at the Royal Rumble. This does not change the fact that Ricochet will leave London as Mr Money in the Bank.

Shinsuke Nakamura then comes out. Nakamura asks if this is a done deal, he says that he can’t believe that Ricochet doesn’t care, because he does. But he says that he will leave as Mr Money in the Bank.

LA Knight then comes out. He says that he sees Ricochet and Nakamura as useless as basketball cleats . He then sees a guy who makes videos for 14 year old girls and pretends to be a megastar. Knight says that he has a map for Logan that has directions for where he can stick it. He says the briefcase has his name on it.

Santos Escobar then comes out. He says that he is hearing empty promises and lies. He welcomes Logan to the party. He says at the end of the day, at MitB, the man standing tall will be the man that represents La Raza and LWO.

Butch then heads out. Logan says that he doesn't even know who he is. Butch gets in the ring and attacks Logan. A brawl then breaks out in the ring. Santos and Ricochet tackle each other out of the ring. Logan takes out Butch with a right hand and he is left standing tall in the ring. Logan then takes out Santos and Ricochet with a somersault senton. Logan gets back in the ring, sets up a ladder and climbs it to pose with the MitB briefcase.

Match 4: Matt Riddle vs Ludvig Kaiser w/Gunther

The match begins and the men lock up. Kaiser gets Riddle in the corner. Riddle ducks a right hand and kicks away at the chest. Kaiser blocks a kick, but Riddle takes him down and goes for an ankle lock. Kaiser immediately gets to the ropes. Kaiser turns Riddle in the corner and rocks him with a punch. Kaiser kicks him in the midsection, but Riddle comes right back with a pair of deadlift gutwrench suplexes. Riddle follows up with a Broton before going to the apron. Kaiser rolls out of the ring, so Riddle kicks him in the face. Riddle shouts at Gunther. Kaiser uses the distraction to chop block Riddle on the apron. Kaiser then hits a snap suplex off the apron to the floor as we go to a break.

They get to their feet and exchange punches. Riddle gets the better of Kaiser and rocks him with a snap kick to the head. A good match. Kaiser is a great worker, as is Riddle. Very enjoyable to watch. Grade B-

After the match, Gunther attempts a sneak attack but Riddle is ready. Riddle is able to avoid a chop from Gunther and kicks at him. Gunther then blocks a kick and takes down Riddle with a kick to his leg. Kaiser then attacks Riddle and holds him down. Gunther then stomps on Riddle’s ankle, trying to hurt Riddle’s ankle like Riddle hurt Vinci’s ankle. Gunther and Kaiser leave the ring while Riddle is holding his ankle.

Backstage Segment:

Riddle is being helped backstage by medical personnel. He is unable to put any pressure on his ankle.

Also backstage, Owens and Zayn are talking. Gunther and Ludvig Kaiser come up to them. Owens says that they weren’t called. Kaiser tells them that what happened to Riddle can happen to them too. Owens begins to lose his temper, but Zayn stops him. Zayn says that they have something to take care of. Zayn then shows Owens his phone and they walk away.

Video Footage:

We see footage from earlier today of Chad Gable running a training session for Maxxine Dupri and Otis. Maxxine says that she is ready for Valhalla. Meanwhile, in the ring, Erik hits a distracted Gable with a full nelson into a knee to the head, covers him and picks up the win.

An OK match. It's a cute story seeing Gable training Maxxine. To me, that's what this whole rivalry is about. Let’s see if she becomes an actual in ring competitor or its just a short time thing. Grade C-

Backstage Segment:

The Judgement Day is backstage. Dominik says that it doesn’t matter who Cody picks to team with, because the Judgement Day is on the same page. Priest and Balor have some issues to deal with. Rhea says that she has something to handle.

None match, Just dominance from Rhea in a surprise attack. No grade given due to no match taking place.

The referee calls for the bell. Trish has now qualified for the MitB ladder match due to disqualification.

An OK match. I was expecting Zoey Stark to get involved and having Becky Lynch get involved too was a good way to keep this rivalry going. Having Trish be in a MitB match in 2023 was not something I had on my bingo card for events this year, but I’m very excited for it. Grade C

A great match that seemed to be slow to start, but got better as it went along. Zayn is still super over with the crowd and Dominik has major heat no matter what. Good chemistry between all participants, including Rhea. Grade B

A good overall episode of Raw. Still too much filler for my liking. I stand by the fact that Raw should go back down to 2 hours. Not long now until Money in the Bank and its shaping up to one hell of a PLE.
