OTT put on 3 shows in 3 different Countries this weekend. I was there for the 1st of those in Wolverhampton.
Here’s what went down in a packed Hangar.
LJ CLEARY VS JAMES ELLIS
LJ is making a name for himself in Noah while Ellis is doing the same around BritWres.
Cleary picked up the win in 6:42.
MIKE BAILEY, KID LYKOS AND ROBBIE X VS BIG DAMO, OMARI AND ADAM MAXTED
The winning team would move into a 3 way match which I assumed was the following day. I also missed what the winner of both matches would be awarded.
I thought I knew which team would win and was right but this wasn’t predictable.
There was a clear speed Vs power battle as Maxted threw his opponents about with ease. Robbie X went to the top and Speedball was a distraction which I thought was going to be the end as Speedball then accidentally booted Robbie who pushed him back as Omari took advantage and slammed both men at the same time for a close 2 count.
Speed won on this occasion as Speedball Mike Bailey, Lykos and Robbie X moved to a 3 way match which surprisingly was happening next.
SPEEDBALL MIKE BAILEY VS LYKOS VS ROBBIE X
The X Division Champion hit plenty of strikes on both men but missed his double knee backflip. A move that has less success than Ric Flair climbing to the top rope.
The match was pure non-stop action (pun intended) and I managed to catch the closing sequence below.
DANHAUSEN VS CHARLES CROWLEY
Crowley got a loud reception but Danhausen is a wrestler the majority in the Hangar had not seen live before so got a bigger one.
This was always going to have large elements of comedy.
Crowley had brought balloons to the ring and when Danhausen had him in the corner he attached one of the balloons to Crowley’s wrist. The balloon was being very nice rather than very evil as every time Crowley was down the balloon pulled him back up including for a pin attempt. Danhausen eventually popped the balloon.
Danhausen hit a German suplex before looking for his cape which he couldn’t find. He blamed Crowley and charged at him. Charles blocked it and poked his fingers into Danhausen eyes with a funny reaction from the AEW talent. Crowley followed with a springboard cutter but it was Danhausen that picked up the win before celebrating in Crowleys hat.
DAN MOLONEY VS CONNOR MILLS
There was a fantastic hype package for this which brought up Mills struggling during the pandemic and reaching out to Moloney while Dan did the same earlier this year with Connor.
From a pure wrestling aspect this was always likely to be the match of the night and that’s how it went down.
Moloney has always been popular in the Hangar. Even before he went to New Japan and became part of the United Empire and then Bullet Club. He was the Fight Club Pro Champion and Tag Team Champion when the promotion last ran.
There’s an element of BritWres’ hardcore fans who are loving the effort, improvement and rise he’s made on the scene. If something clicks soon you’ll be seeing him as World Champion of promotions in 2025 unless he gets a contract somewhere.
This match was stiff. Both men know the other can take the shots. Mooney hit a top rope suplex but Mills rallied back with a twisting tombstone. Mills can still fly and showed it with a suicide dive and jumping from the top rope over the guide rail onto Moloney feet first.
Moloney went for numerous Drilla Killers with Mills countering and it took 2 after over 22 minutes of action to put True Grit away.
Mills sat on the apron in contemplation after the match and Moloney came and sat with him before they left together. Class.
OTT WORLD TITLE
TRENT SEVEN VS TREVOR LEE
It’s amazing that someone as good at wrestling and charismatic could be wasted when under contract but sports entertainment’s loss is wrestlings gain.
Seven Nation Army belted out and support for Trent Seven in his hometown was deafening as always.
This seemed to get under Lee’s skin a bit as when on top he asked the crowd where Trent was now as he nearly took his head off with a punt.
Trent hit a Tyler Driver 97 for a 2 count and also The Bitter End for another in tribute to his former British Strong Style teammates.
The Seven Stars Lariot wasn’t enough to put Lee down but the Burning Hammer saw the Champion retain.
Trent grabbed the mic and got the 1st time that I can remember for 4 years referenced Fight Club Pro. He praised Dereiss and said this is his Main Event, mentioning that the 0121 beat Moustache Mountain in Fight Club Pro’s last match. He urged the crowd to get behind The Lyrical Dragon.
NIC NEMETH VS MAN LIKE DEREISS
Deriess came out to ‘Freed from desire’ as his entrance took about 4 minutes but hyped up a jam packed Hangar.
‘Wanted man’ played and Nic Nemeth came out to a reception just as loud. He’s someone a percentage of the crowd have watched on TV for the last 15 years and had an aura about him.
The TNA and AAA Champion controlled much of the match which was more of a sports entertainment affair.
A ref bump gave Nemeth the chance to hit Dereiss with one of his titles but he missed and The Lyrical Dragon his a 450 splash but there was no referee. Oscar Harding came running down the ramp for a close 2 count before being superkicked by Nemeth.
Dereiss went for another 450 but Nic got his knees up before hitting the Danger Zone for a 2.9.
Nemeth won at just over 27 1/2 minutes before shaking Dereiss’s hand which was slightly surprising with how the match had gone. The crowd chanted TNA and Nemeth said “We’ll worry about that later. Scrapper-fucking-Mania!! I’ll make this short and sweet as I know you guys have got bars to get to. I was told you’re the next big thing to come out of here (Dereiss). I was told this would steal the show and you’re damn right we did.
This was a cracking show which clearly had many interested as the Hangar was as full as I can ever remember. Seats were as far back as merch which meant navigation was tough during the interval.
I feel like I’d be doing a disservice if I didn’t say I was disappointed there was no women’s matches. I see promotions get stick for just having 1 or 2 women’s matches. There is no excuse for non at all.
Hopefully OTT (or/and Burning Heart) realise that the demand is there in the West Midlands to have monthly shows. Wolverhampton showed up and deserve it.
