The reigning NWA US Tag Team Champions, The Midnight Express, have also captured the world titles, and Jim Cornette is more than happy to tell the world all about it
NWA - JIM CROCKETT PROMOTIONS - 1988
The reigning NWA US Tag Team Champions, The Midnight Express, have also added the world titles to their coveted collection. In this interview segment, manager Jim Cornette is more than happy to tell the world all about it and brag about how good his guys are.
Two different incarnations of the Midnights (one featuring Dennis Condrey, and then later with Stan Lane), each won NWA world tag team gold while part of Carolina-based Jim Crockett Promotions. And while many experts would say that the original pairing was superior as an in-ring duo, it was Bobby Eaton & Stan Stan Lane who pulled off a feat no one ever has.
Led by the gregarious Cornette, the Express entered a match in Philadelphia as the reigning NWA United States Tag Team Champions. By the time they left the building that night, they had collected another set of straps: the NWA World Tag Team Titles.
This made Eaton & Lane the only two men to ever hold both coveted championships at the same time. But in somewhat of a twist, it wasn't the Rock 'n' Roll Express, The Road Warriors, or another babyface team that they defeated on the night. It was Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard - fellow heels and members of The Four Horsemen faction - who the Midnight Express took down.
Tully & Arn were on their way out of Jim Crockett Promotions and on their way to becoming The Brain Busters in the WWF. Meanwhile, Stan and Bobby would continue to team until the early 90s regularly, then sporadically thereafter. In later years, all three members would appear together, flanked by Jim Cornette and his ever-present tennis racket.
Despite calls for their induction into the WWE Hall of Fame, the Midnight Express has yet to receive the call. Bobby Eaton, the heart and soul of the squad, passed away on August 4, 2021. He was 62.
