KAYFABE CLIPS: AWA World Champion Curt Hennig talks about being the very best wrestler and athlete of 1988

As one of the best technical stars in the world, Curt Hennig has ascended to the top of the American Wrestling Association, and he says that's where he plans on staying

As one of the best technical stars in the world, Curt Hennig has ascended to the top of the American Wrestling Association, and he says that's where he plans on staying. Hennig had dethroned longtime AWA kingpin Nick Bockwinkel and the second-generation superstar was not the franchise player for the promotion. In many ways, he represented what many hoped would be a bit of a 'youth movement' in the Minnesota-based organization, that had seen the likes of both Bockwinkel and Verne Gagne reign at the top for over 25 years. Curt Hennig, along with stars like The Midnight Rockers (Shawn Michaels & Marty Janetty) and Women's World Champion Madusa Miceli, were supposed to be the next generation of the American Wrestling Association, but all eventually defected to the World Wrestling Federation with a couple of years. As Mr. Perfect, Hennig would go on to fame there, winning the WWF Intercontinental Title on two occasions. He would be posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007.
